In-situ buttering to avoid lamellar tearing Web15: Buttering (build-up) is permitted as follows: a) Buttering shall not exceed the lesser of 10 mm or 1/3 base metal thickness. b) If buttering will exceed 10 mm or 1/3 base metal thickness then this shall be witnessed by the customer and the area shall be tested by PT/MT following completion of buttering but before final welding of the joint.
